WIDOWS ASSISTANCE
WIDOWS ASSISTANCE
Widows in most poorer countries have no one to care for them and most of these women have no one to assist them to restart or continue their lives after the death of their spouses. In many cases the widows are left with young children who need to be cared for; at times it is their own children, as seen in victims of early childhood marriages, and at other times they are raising their grandchildren. In Liberia, their homes or properties are taken away from them because the society in which they live does not protect them. The women are forgotten once their spouses pass away. In countries where men have the upper hand, these women struggle for everything, including the most basic needs of life. Their basic needs are ignored which leads to homelessness, rape and violence against them and their children. They become nonexistent and are quickly forgotten in their communities and societies. Since the Civil war in Liberia and the Ebola Pandemic, the actual number of widows living in the country is unknown. Most of the widows live in poverty due to the lack of resources. As children growing up they did not have the opportunity to receive an education that could have enabled them to survive before or after the death of their husbands. In most cases, these widows are left to take care of their grandchildren because the children who they used to depend on for support, died. Today, many of these women are desperately in need of food, housing and financial assistance among other simple human basic needs.
Since the beginning of our journey as an organization, Sensee Foundation of Hope along with it sponsors, has been able to start a Care program for the Widows in 2021. The program is directed toward the underprivilege widows of Liberia. Our goal for this program is to relieve some of the worries of life’s basic needs such as food packages, financial help, and in some cases provide shelter. The organization has been able to reach out to widows who are in desperate need. Each month with as little as US $30 per household, Sensee Foundation of Hope and its trusted sponsors dispense a parcel of food (Rice, Maggi Cubes, a bag of salt and a gallon of oil) to the widows.
While Sensee Foundation of Hope has not been able to alleviate all of their problems, so far we have been able to assist the widows in our program to feed their family each month.
To prevent water leakage during the rainy season, Mrs. T Bah, a widow in our program, received a new tent for her roof. Mrs Bah became a widow during the civil war, now lives in poverty. In her story, the organization learned that her husband and her son who used to provide for her both died in the civil war. Although she was left with a mud house by her spouse, she could not afford to get a roof over her home.
